I've been grappling with my toilet for a couple of weeks now. The basic symptom is that the tank will slowly leak causing the fill valve to open up for a few of
seconds every couple minutes. It forces me to keep the door to my bathroom closed (which makes my 600 sqft feel like 300) or shut off the valve to the toilet
when its not in use.
First thing I did was try a different flapper on the flush valve. No deal. I tried another Kohler flapper that was branded "Certain Seal!" but that didn't help things either. Then I noticed that the gasket on the beneath the flush valve was installed upside-down. After wrangling with that (and purchasing some 12" channel locks to get at the locknut), I succeeded in dumping a tank full of water on my floor and not fixing the problem. In the midst of prodding around, I happened to notice that if the little fill hose from the fill valve wasn't stuffed down the overflow pipe, the tank never leaked. I finally verified this by peering down the overflow pipe with a flashlight and seeing the trickle. So I left it out of the overflow pipe to keep it from leaking but discovered that its spray was shooting out from under the tank lid and leaving puddles under my toilet. AGGH!! So the fill hose is somehow draining water from the tank into overflow pipe. I suppose this means that I need to replace the fill valve, but I don't exactly have the time to do this right now. Instead, I jury-rigged it in a way that appears to be stopping the syphon. There's something to be said for a porcelein hole in the ground with a hose. |
