I was sitting down, minding my own business, trying to read some data off of a CD when all of a sudden I hear a tremendous POP! Like hearing a gunshot.. after I get over my initial shock I hear my CD-ROM drive making all sorts of crunching noises and grinding to a halt.
Initially, the drive tray didn't want to open but I tripped the door lock and used a screwdriver to pry the door open. A whole bunch of glitter, like confetti, fell to my desk. Sheesh! After disassembling the drive and getting all the shattered pieces out, I spent a whole can of compressed air dusting the insides out. Without significant forensic investigation, I couldn't tell you whether or not the CD was cracked before going into the drive. I guess they aren't joking when they say that CD drives won't get much faster than 52x due to the centrifugal forces involved.. |
